Nursing a hangover

Nursing a hangover

To start with, yesterday i was preety drunk :) So today I decided to lighten you up, about nursing a hangover. I did a little research on google, and find some preety interesting theories (which I will definitely try next time I’m drinking :) ) So, here’s 5 ideas how to treat this anoying phase, called hangover :)

1. “There is little scientific evidence to back up many of the proposed “hangover cures.” However, experts agree that rehydration is an essential step in managing the symptoms of hangover. Drinking lots of water during and after consumption of alcohol can be of benefit, as can consumption of electrolyte-containing beverages such as some sports drinks. If you can consume fluids before going to bed following an evening of overindulging, that’s even better.”

2. “”Sleeping it off” is another tried-and-true remedy. Taking pain relievers, such as ibuprofen (Advil), to relieve headaches and muscle aches can also be helpful. However, avoid taking the pain reliever acetaminophen (Tylenol), which has the potential to damage the liver, especially in conjunction with alcohol.”

3. “Most experts agree that eating can help relieve the symptoms of hangover, but contrary to popular belief, there are no specific foods or types of foods that are best in this situation. Vitamin B1 (thiamine) and B6 (pyridoxine) supplements have also been shown in some studies to lessen the severity of hangover symptoms.”

4. “What about that cup of coffee? Coffee itself has not been proven to have an effect on hangover symptoms, but the caffeine in coffee can increase the effect of pain medicines, such as ibuprofen. Because caffeine can further dehydrate the body, most experts don’t recommend drinking coffee while nursing a hangover. Water, green tea, or other decaffeinated teas are a better choice.”

5. “Finally, as with many other conditions, the adage about the ounce of prevention holds true. Avoiding excessive alcohol consumption, drinking plenty of non-alcoholic beverages between alcoholic drinks, and consuming alcohol with food can all help you avoid a hangover.”

I really hope this will help somebody, but the best way to never have a hangover, is to give up drinking :) So if you need help giving up, there’s a program that can make your way to succes easier. You can find the program right here.

Best regards, Ziga.

Bloody Mary Initially Intended to Cure Hangovers

December 13, 2010

Bloody Mary Initially Intended to Cure Hangovers

The Bloody Mary is generally served in the morning simply because it was originally made to cure hangovers. The name most probably refers to the blood red color of the drink.

The Bloody Mary is a very well-known cocktail that contains simply just vodka, tomato juice, and a variety of spices. It is served virtually world wide. The traditional Bloody Mary is generally vodka, tomato juice and Tabasco sauce and/or Worcestershire Sauce (in England, generally known as Worcester Sauce). These mostly are added lightly, especially the Tabasco. Often that is counted in drops. Depending on the measurement of the glass, you can add one drop for light, 2-3 drops for medium spicy, 4-5 drops for a complete wake-up and normally 6 or more drops destroys it, and you. If the glass is small enough, five to six drops could blow some people’s heads off. The Worcestershire Sauce is a milder and extremely good tasting version of the Tabasco blend which might be added. Worcestershire Sauce and Tabasco are often used together at roughly 4 drops of Worcester to 1 drop Tabasco. The Bloody Mary is most typically served with a celery stalk, and there is a variety that may come with a pinch of celery power

The Bloody Mary is probably the least difficult drink to mix, but around the years various variations have come along. For one thing, there is variety in the flavor of both Vodka and Tomato Juice. They are definitely the first basis of the flavoring of a Bloody Mary. If either of those two ingredients tastes sub-par or strange the Bloody Mary will taste sub par or strange. Generally is more unflavored or pure your vodka and tomato juice are the more pleasing your Bloody Mary will be for your private home or restaurant / bar guests.

To keep a ‘true’ Bloody Mary, albeit a variation, you may also add really small quantities of beef consomme or bouillon, horseradish, celery, olive, salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, lemon juice, celery salt, plus, naturally, salt and pepper..

The Bloody Mary potentially goes back to Paris in 1921 at The New York Bar (later called Harry’s New York Bar) in Paris frequented by Ernest Hemingway and a lot of American expatriates. Fernand Petiot who worked in that bar is recognized by many as the inventor of the drink. Credit is at times given to George Jessel as the inventor of the Bloody Mary drink in 1939 who appeared to have made it with half vodka and half tomato juice, a proportion that is way out of line with current criteria. And there is also a story that Fernand Petiot invented the drink, without horseradish, at the Saint Regis Bar in New York City in 1934, but it was first called ‘The Red Snapper’. Fernand Petiot seems to have said that George Jessel invented the classic vodka and tomato juice drink, but he was the one that added the spices.

In a quote from The New Yorker magazine in July 1964: “I initiated the Bloody Mary of today,” he told us. ‘Jessel said he created it, but it was really nothing but vodka and tomato juice when I took it over. I cover the bottom of the shaker with four large dashes of salt, two dashes of black pepper, two dashes of cayenne pepper, and a layer of Worcestershire sauce; I then add a dash of lemon juice and some cracked ice, put in two ounces of vodka and two ounces of thick tomato juice, shake, strain, and pour. We serve a hundred to a hundred and fifty Bloody Marys a day here in the King Cole Room and in the other restaurants and the banquet rooms.’” So the first Bloody Marys seem to have included equal parts vodka and tomato juice salt, pepper, cayenne, Worcestershire Sauce, and lemon juice.

The call Bloody Mary seems to generally be most associated with the English Queen Mary the First (constantly called Mary Queen of Scots) due to the fact, in the Marian Persecutions, she had almost 300 religious dissenters burned at the stake, earning her the nickname of “Bloody Mary”.

If you are a Bloody Mary aficionado such as myself, you may have tried many different types in many alternative places. My love affair with Bloody Mary began at the old Oxford Hotel Bar in Denver in the middle 1970s. After the bar had closed as well as the audience gone home, the staff and performers often had Bloody Mart ‘contests’ where each person would make one round their favorite way and everyone rated their favorites. By the seventh or eighth round, we’d have voted for anything. The Bloody Mary may have been invented to cure hangovers, but it is no lightweight in creating hangovers.

The least favorite Bloody Mary I can remember was in a place where you’d expect it to be very good, like their food, La Plage on the Beach in North Goa, India. It’s an instance of someone being way too creative. It actually had a bunch of leaves in it. I enjoy their food, however the Bloody Mary, Ich. The famed Salish Hotel above the Snoqualmie Falls in Washington State has a very respectable and a little variable Bloody Mary called an Infused Mary using a secret recipe of herbs and spices that are cured for days in a large jar hidden behind the bar. But ninety-five percent of the time I’m served a good Bloody Mary.

There are a great number of types and variations of ‘designer’ Bloody Mary’s that most have to change their names. A version that is very popular with non-drinkers is called the Virgin Mary considering that it is a Bloody Mary with no alcohol. To name just a few, there is the Bloody Maria with Tequila, the Bloody Geisha with Sake, the Bloody Pirate with Rum, the Bloody Maureen with Guinness, the Bloody Molly with Irish Whiskey, the Bloody Scotsman with Scotch, the Bloody Eight or Eight Ball with spicy V8, and the Ruddy Mary with Gin.

The classic Bloody Mary breakfast-time, hangover curing drink is a surefire winner. If it’s made right, it’s bound to please, and there is a lot of room for experimentation. That makes it one of many amazing drink recipes of all time. But if you’re going to experiment a lot, better have a designated driver.

Home Remedies can Cure Hangover

Home Remedies can Cure Hangover

Hangover refers to the after-effects of consuming excessive alcohol. Also known as veisalgia, hangover occurs in almost all the people who drink large amounts of alcohol. It is generally seen that people do not exercise self-control when they start drinking alcohol, which results in hangover the next day. While, for regular drinkers, it might be a natural phenomenon, the first timers or occasional drinkers face a lot of trouble from it. Drinking too much alcohol or drinking it too fast is the primary cause of hangover.

Modern cultures still have diverse beliefs about effective hangover treatment. Russians simply sweat it out in the sauna. Germans eat a mixture of herring, pickles, and goulash. Many Americans used to create a stomach clenching drink made of tomato juice and a raw egg. Today Americans are more often turning to hangover helpers that come in pill form.

These modern methods for hangover treatment and its painful symptoms contain natural pain killers, like willow bark or feverfew. Taking over the counter pain killers is a terrible idea when dealing with a hangover headache. Aspirin and ibuprofen can really do a number on the stomach, and acetaminophen for a hangover can cause irreversible liver damage.

Today’s hangover cures also contain other ingredients like B vitamins, vitamin C, and even activated charcoal. The vitamins help to give the body a boost and help the liver with the strenuous job of filtering alcohol out of the body. Activated charcoal helps absorb toxins.

Luckily, modern party merry makers don’t have to choke down eels, pickled eyes, or raw eggs. A hangover treatment often awaits in the form of a convenient, easy to swallow pill. It’s nothing like what they do in ancient times. Do check out some of my recommendations for the best hangover treatment and helpers I have discovered for myself on the market today. I don’t have to wake up after a good night out feeling miserable anymore.

Some Home Remedies can Cure Hangover:

Drink Lots of Water – Consume lots of water before going to bed and even after waking up. It fights with dehydration. Drink 10-12 glasses of water every day.

Eat Something before Drinking – Do not consume alcohol on an empty stomach. Eat something with and after drink. It reduces the alcohol entry rate in the body. Try to eat starch filled foods with or after drinking. These foods help in slowing down the absorption of alcohol.

Bananas – Bananas are very helpful in refilling your body with the potassium that you drained off while vomiting. Eat 1-2 bananas at a time.

Vitamin C tablets – These tablets break down the alcohol substances in the body. Take 2 Vitamin C tablets at a time if you feeling dizzy. You can even take Vitamin C rich fruits to treat hangover.

Infallible method for a Hangover-Free Holiday Season

Infallible method for a Hangover-Free Holiday Season

Uncle Joe infamous cranberry engraving mix, Grandmother famous X-mas pies, and the plethora of wine and spirits we consume in our parties, always gives us a something to remember them by. Not to mention the few extra drinks at the office holiday party, or the too many “bubbles” on New Year’s Eve, and even the chances that you will inevitably wake up with a dreaded hangover.

If you want to enjoy a harmless Holiday season, sure you will need a good advice to prevent your hangover. First, lets understand how hangovers are created in the first place, and then find out how symptoms that come along can be avoided, as raging headaches, dehydration and fatigue.

Being a water-soluble liquid, within a few seconds of passing your lips alcohol will be distributed on parts of the body with the highest concentration of water. Your brain soaks it up like a big sponge; in fact within 90 seconds of your very first drink, alcohol begins to cross the blood brain barrier. This is where all the fun begins! You blood alcohol content (BAC) will reach its peak within 30 to 45 minutes, however will continue to rise as more drinks are consumed, bringing you the felling called “BUZZ”. However when your body starts working the other way around, the “Hangover” feeling will start, and always last longer than the BUZZ. Why? Because it depends on how fast your body metabolizes the alcohol.

There are a few home advices that could be taken in order to prevent hangovers, as eating before drinking, choosing a beverage that produces less effect of hangover, or some pills that can be found over the counter. But do they work?? An interesting solution which has hooked Europeans for many years is one made of a key ingredient designed to ward off the unpleasant aftereffects of alcohol: Artichoke.

Artichoke is popular by its tremendous properties for renewing the liver. It’s actually referred to as a hepatoprotector and a hepatic cell generator. Since artichoke juice probably wouldn’t be terrific, the product Security Feel Better, manufactured in France, concocted a mixture of pear, artichoke, Vitamin C and fructose to make a very neutral tasting drink. The fructose will increase blood sugar, the Vitamin C replaces what you lost by drinking in the first place, and the artichoke soothes the liver. The pear seems to be just for taste. It smells of pear, tastes slightly of pear, but it isn’t sweet or syrupy. And, because it’s just an ounce, there’s not even a lot of it that you have to drink either.

Their test results show that because it will speed up your metabolism, the effects will come in 45 minutes after drinking Security Feel Better. And the most interesting aspect of it is that works not only for hangover cure, but being a digestive aid, it will also make you feel better after ingestion of heavy meals (remember how many hours it took you to sleep after that Thanksgiving dinner last year???).

With the holidays fast approaching and Thanksgiving dinners, Christmas parties and New Years Eve celebrations, make Security Feel Better as your strategy to get through this holiday season with no hangover symptoms. The product is available in the US territory already.

A hangover cure

A hangover cure

So the other day I was watching a show where a startup company was looking to bring to market a hangover patch (similar in concept to the nicotine patch) which would pump your body full of vitamins while you consumed alcohol, all with the purpose of reducing or eliminating a hangover. I was intrigued. Now, I have heard of hangover pills but they require too much work and with the amount of liquid you consume while boozing you are bound to be peeing out most of the beneficial ingredients. With a patch, you slap it on, the vitamins get absorbed throughout your skin all the while you can pound back drink after drink without worry. This makes sense.

After a search on the Internet I found a company called Zaca which is already marketing this kick ass concept. The cost is .99 for a 6 patches, with discounts available for larger purchases. At over per patch it isn’t exactly cheap but it can be less than the price of even one drink at the bar. I figured if I was going to buy 12 drinks to make me feel terrible, the cost of one drink to make me feel better would totally be worth it.

After no deliberation I immediately went ahead and placed my order. Within minutes, I received an email from Mark of Zaca with some immediate, pressing concerns. Since I live in Canada and the product was shipping from the US he wanted to give me the heads up that my order may not arrive for St. Patty’s Day, which was just around the corner. Right then and there I could tell that I had made the right decision.

Approximately a week later (just missing my St. Patty’s boozefest) I was excited to receive my hangover patches in the mail. Of course, it didn’t take long to put those patches to a good challenge as the next Friday was yet another piss up. After cracking my first bevy I slapped a patch on my left shoulder and proceeded to party like it was 1999. An entertaining night flew by and after a solid dozen or so drinks I found myself stumbling home with a big slice in hand coming to a crash in my bed where the room spun me to sleep.

The next morning I awoke, still feeling intoxicated as the patches do not suppress alcohol (thankfully). After grabbing a cup of Joe and whipping up some eggs and toast I found my body really rebounding from the night before. Normally hangover + exercise = booze sweats + nausea but not today, nor any of the days that I have used the patch. I actually went for a solid 8 km (5 mi) run that day and felt great afterwards. After going through 5 sessions with the hangover patch now I can tell you the results are very consistent.

The Best Hangover Cures

The Best Hangover Cures

After a night out drinking in bars and nightclubs, the worst person to wake up with in your bed is a hangover. Hangovers are not very good looking, they don’t wake you up in a nice way, and they hang around all day even though you wanted to kick them out of your house as soon as you opened your eyes. If you have a day full of plans, then you’ll have no time to waste dealing with that feeling of headache and nausea. Luckily, there are some tricks that can help you feel (semi) all right in no time at all.

Hangovers occur because your body is dehydrated, lacking in vitamins, and filled with toxins from the alcohol of the night before. The best way to cure a hangover is to prevent it: if you’re sober enough while you’re out in bars and nightclubs, then make sure you get a drink or two with vitamins in it, such as Vodka and Orange Juice. Also, Make sure you drink plenty of water before you go home, and eat something filling like McDonalds or KFC to help increase your body’s alcohol absorption. While that annoying headache can be lessened the next morning, it’s always better if you don’t have to deal with it at all.

The next morning after your big night at a bar or nightclub, the first thing you should do is load up on a bottle of water. If you’re not planning to get out of bed the entire day, keep it by your bedside; for those who need to get up and about, make sure you drink plenty of water before you leave the home as the water will help flush out the toxins. Also grab a banana: they’re filled with good vitamins and can help your body absorb the alcohol. Whatever you do, don’t get a strong coffee. Coffee dehydrates, and your body will just feel worse and worse and worse…and you’ll probably feel sicker, too.

If you feel like you’re going to throw up – as disgusting as that is – let yourself: while throwing up feels disgusting, it’s the best way to get rid of toxins in your body. And if you really want to get rid of some of those toxins, then sweat it out. Even though running or walking feels like such a challenge, getting the blood pumping around your body is not a bad thing. Go for a quick jog or powerwalk when you wake up: even though you’ll feel like throwing up while you do it, your body will thank you afterwards.

The most popular folk myth for curing a hangover is more alcohol. While your body is having to deal with absorbing the new alcohol, it will ignore the old and give you a temporary moment of relief. This doesn’t last forever though, and it’s probably best when you have absolutely no other option. If you’re at home all day, drink a Bloody Mary and while your body is dealing with the new alcohol, eat food and drink water and juices to help your body recover.

Of course, a hangover is better prevented than cured, but the reality is that when you’re drunk…you just don’t care. So the next time that headache wakes up next to you in bed, punch it in the face with one of these cures, and get on with your day.
