Who doesn’t want to sit comfortably in a garden or house with a chilled beer? There is, most of the times, a special brand of the beer drinkers which they prefer. There are people who like tasting different types of beers which are not commonly found in supermarkets. These beers are mostly brewed in the microbreweries of the home brewers. This is the reason why most people like to have beers made by their own hands using the home brewing kits. So if you are wondering how to make homemade beer, please keep reading.

]]>

Making beer is quite easy once you have the proper brewing kit which is available with some manufacturers. However, make it a point to purchase beer brewing kit of a good quality so that you get a beer in substantial amount which tastes really good. A decent homebrew kit makes up to 6 gallons of beer in a single batch. The substandard kits make less amount of beer which does not taste good. There are also microbrewery brewing kits available which includes everything needed for the process complete with the ingredients and bottles. There are also individual ingredient kits and equipment kits available which contains the ingredients required for beer like the yeast and the tools required like the kettle respectively.

It should be noted that the decent beer brewing kits come with instruction book in which the process is explained step-by-step in detail. You can therefore decide on the taste of the beer which you are drinking and enjoyed the same. This method is also quite cost-effective especially if you drink beer on a regular basis. I hope now you will not wonder how to make homemade beer.

How Is Beer Created

September 19, 2011

How Is Beer Created

We all know the effects (and after-effects) of beer. But lifting a glass of cool liquid to your mouth on a scorching hot day, have you ever stopped to consider the processes and ingredients involved in making it? Well maybe not but here is the answer anyway!

Simply, beer is a fermented combination of water, barley, yeast and hops. The major variation in any beer is the type of yeast used in the fermentation process.

Let’s look at the properties of this beverage.

Water is the main ingredient of beer. In the past, the purity of the water influenced the  final result and was specific to the region of the earth from which it came. Today, water is filtered of these impurities, although pure water supplies are still ideally preferred by elite brewers.

Barley malt is an extremely important ingredient in beer as it is the main source of fermentable sugar. Many new breweries use barley malt extract, in either syrup or powder form, as this form ferments much quicker.  It also contains many minerals and vitamins that help the yeast to grow.

Without yeast, beer would not exist. Yeast is a unique single cell organism that eats sugar and expels alcohol and carbon dioxide, two of the more recognizable ingredients of beer. Yeast comes in several variations, of which there are two major categories that determine the type of beer produced; Ale yeast and Lager yeast. If yeast alone were used the beer would be extremely sweet and therefore another ingredient needs to be added to reach the final product.

Hops are the flowers of the hop plant, a climbing vine plant that grows well in many differing climates. Hops contain acids which add bitterness to beer. Adding bitterness to beer helps to balance the sweetness, as well as acting as a natural preservative. Add more hops to the mixture and you will get a more bitter taste. This kind of beer is extremely popular in Britian and is simply referred to as “Bitter” (the original names are always the best!).

Variations of these ingredients create different tasting beers as well as having an affect on the alcoholic content.

When making your own beer many good resources are available which provide home brewing kits. It is important to read the ingredients of the packets in order to ascertain which has the best mixture according to your needs. One quick tip which many home brewers fail to adhere to is this: “Use fresh still water”!

]]>

Many have often sought information on how to make beer and the basic homebrewing equipment is not very expensive  you can get what you need, for as little as 0.

In order to start making beer, you will need the following:
A brewpot: Primary fermenter: Airlock and stopper: Bottling bucket: Bottles: Bottle brush: Bottle capper: and a thermometer: In addition you can even use items from your kitchen to aid in the beer making. A breakdown of all the equipment is as follows:
Brewpot

A brewpot is made of stainless steel or enamel-coated metal which has at least 15 litre capacity, but it’s no good if it’s made of aluminum or if it’s a chipped enamelized pot, (these will make the beer taste funny). The brew pot is used to boil the ingredients thus begins the first stage of beer making.

Primary fermenter

The primary fermenter is where the beer begins to ferment and become that fabulous stuff that makes you so funny and charming. The primary fermenter must have a minimum capacity of 26 litres and an air tight seal it must also accommodate the airlock and rubber stopper. Make sure the one you buy is made of food-grade plastic, as it wont allow the bad stuff in or let the good stuff out.

Airlock and stopper

The airlock is a handy gadget which allows carbon dioxide to escape from your primary fermenter during fermentation,       it is this process that keeps it from exploding, but it doesn’t allow any of the bad air from outside to enter. It fits into a  rubber stopper, and is placed into the top of your primary fermenter. The stoppers are numbered according to size, so make sure you use the correct stopper for the correct hole

Plastic hose

This is a food grade plastic hose which measures approximately 5 feet in length. It is needed to transfer the beer from system to system, and it is imperitive that it is kept clean and free from damage or clogs

Bottling bucket

This is a large, food-grade plastic bucket with a tap for drawing water at the bottom, it needs to be as big as your primary fermenter, because you need the capacity to pour all the liquid from your primary fermenter into a bottling bucket prior to bottling up.

Bottles
After fermentation, you place the beer in bottles for secondary fermentation and storage. You need enough bottles to hold all the beer you’re going to make, the best kind of bottles are solid glass ones with smooth tops (not the twist-off kind) that will accept a cap from a bottle capper. You can use plastic ones with screw-on lids, but they arent as good for fermentation and dont look as well. Wheather you use glass or plastic bottles, make sure they are dark-colored. Light damages beer, i would recommend green or brown bottles.

Bottle brush

This is a thin, curvy brush which is used to clean bottles because of the the shape of the brush it makes it very affective at getting the bottle spotless. We haven’t even gotten into how clean everything has to be, but we will, and the bottle brush is a specialized bit of cleaning equipment that you will require in order to maintain your bottle kit.

Bottle capper

If you take buy glass bottles, you will need some sort of bottle capper and caps, of course, and you can buy them from any brewing supplies store. The best sort of bottle capper is one which can be affixed to a surface and worked with one hand while you hold the bottle with the other.

Thermometer

This is a thermometer which can be stuck to the side of your fermenter, they are just thin strips of plastic which are self adhesive, and can be found in any brewing supplies store, or from a pet shop or aquarium. Not everything costs money though even some household equipment can be used.

Household items

In addition to the above specialized equipment, you will need the following household items:
Small bowl:
Saucepan:
Rubber spatula:
Oven mitts/pot handlers:
Big mixing spoon:

So there you have the ingredients and the method to make your home brew, all you need now is to get yourself a beer making kit and your on the way to beer heaven.

Part IIII – Yeast: Adding the Kick to Beer

September 13, 2011

Part IIII – Yeast: Adding the Kick to Beer

There are four main components of beer: water, malt, hops and yeast. This article is the last of a four part series that will be covered in that order.

When combined, water, malt and hops create most of what we know as beer. However, without yeast, all you have is a batch of flavored water or wort– there’s no alcohol. Yeast is what converts sugars in the wort into alcohol. As such, you can imagine just how important this living organisim is to the brewing process. Without it, you wouldn’t have much of anything worth drinking. However, just how do these hungry guys work? What are the best types to use in making beer?

Yeast works through metabolism. In essence, it consumes sugar and exudes alcohol and carbon dioxide. It’s a pretty simple system. As long as they have a sufficient supply of sugar (and the alcohol content doesn’t exceed the yeast’s resistance level), it will continue to produce alcohol and carbon dioxide. Of course, brewing is more than just dumping a load of these slurry creatures into your wort. You need to know the characteristics of the yeasts typically used in brewing beer. That word there, “typically” is important. This is because, technically, a wide range of different yeasts can be used, including bread yeast. However, different types produce different flavors, scents and other characteristics, so not all are ideal for brewing beer.

]]>

Beer yeasts are generally slotted into two primary categories. These are top-fermenting and bottom-fermenting yeasts. Top-fermenting forms a frothy head at the top of the fermentation vessel. Most ales (and ale derivatives like stout and porter) are brewed using top-fermenting yeast. Bottom-fermenting yeasts are often used to make lagers, though they can also be used for ales. Bottom-fermenting yeasts usually have a higher tolerance for alcohol and also create a beer with dryer characteristics (they’re a bit more akin to the type used in winemaking).

Wild yeast can also be used in brewing beer, as it is, literally, everywhere. However, using these wild beasts is not particularly advisable (even in fruit beer brewing), as it can lead to problems with control of taste and smell. Wild yeast is not very predictable, though lambic beers do make use of a general type (there are several varieties of common wild yeast where these beers are traditionally brewed).

Yeast is possibly the most important component of brewing, simply because there is no beer without it. While water, hops and malt give the beer flavors, color and other characteristics, the type of yeast you use will also have an immense impact on the finished product, and will dictate everything from its alcohol content to is dryness and more.

The Quickest Way To Get Started Brewing

September 10, 2011

The Quickest Way To Get Started Brewing

There are a lot of people who have taken the plunge to buy all the equipment and get started making their own beer from scratch at home. But the odds are that just as many people are curious about brewing beer at home but are pushed away by the challenge of buying all this stuff and figuring out how to do it and then the problem of the mess and the storage of equipment and beer in different phases of fermentation and completion.

For many, what is needed is an easy way to give home brewing a shot without having to go to all the effort of buying a complete set up of equipment, all of the ingredients and the bottles and storage just to find out if you like it. What is not generally known is that there is such a fast track way to making beer at home. By buying a simple device called a beer making machine, you can easily make a batch of beer right in the home

The good thing about a beer making machine is that it is basically a plug and go situation. This takes a lot of the intimidation out of buying many individual units of equipment and going through each step of brewing and fermentation by the seat of your pants. The brewing machine goes a long way to take the preparation over so you can do all the steps using the resources of the machine. When you buy the machine, it comes with the ingredients and instructions.

]]>

The entire design of a beer making machine is based on the idea of reducing the mess and fuss of beer making for that first time home brewer who needs to have some of the joy of making their own brew but not as much of the work and the worry. You certainly don’t have to be a beer making guru to use these user friendly machines because the instructions are clear and written in an understandable way and the ingredients come measured and ready to go.

But as with any ready made solution for discovering something as great as home brewing your own beer, there are pluses and minuses to breaking yourself in on a beer making machine. Probably one of the biggest pluses is that they are a one time use machine that you can use and throw away. This gets the problems of cleaning and sanitation out of the loop entirely. All of the ingredients are prepared and ready to add in premeasured amounts so the fuss and worry about going from completely raw materials is removed as well. It is just about as user friendly as you can make home brewing be.

The down side of using a beer making machine to break into the craft of home brewing is that because it is completely set up when you buy it as a kit, you don’t get the change to play with the ingredients and enjoy the creativity and experimentation that is a big part of why beer making is so fun. You go through the steps and make one good batch of beer. But you don’t have the chance to make it a great batch of beer because you cannot make changes to the ingredients as you go.

Also a beer making machine is sold to make one and only one batch of beer and then you, in theory, are to throw it away. This may seem like a big waste and you might try to clean it up to use it again. But the real idea of the product is as a starter experience. It really isn’t the kind of thing intended for you to buy a new kit every month and continue making that same kind of beer each time.

But keep the perspective that it is not really designed to be your total and final solution for beer making. By breaking into home brewing with the beer making machine, you get some of the experience of making and fermenting your own beer and then bottling it to serve a few weeks later as a genuine product of your little at home brewery. And the fun of that may be a great way for you to start making beer and then grow into a hobby that may last a lifetime.

Brewing has been around for centuries, and drinking is associated with festivity and recreation—so where do the new, sobering concerns of sustainability and the environment fit into the beer industry?

Brewing on a Budget

September 7, 2011

Brewing on a Budget

For a beer lover, one of the most enjoyable hobbies you can pick up is to brew your own beer at home. Once you get set up with the equipment and basic supplies, it’s a fairly affordable hobby and you will get a lot of entertainment out of going through the brewing and fermentation process. Then once you start bringing out your own home brewed beer, you get the sense of pride because this beer made entirely by you, not to mention the enjoyment of sucking down that hearty blend that you created yourself.

One of the hold ups that may have kept you from getting into making your own beer may have the cost issue. If you have ever taken a tour of a brewery and you see the huge machines and storage tanks, it’s hard to see how you can do that in your kitchen with just a few simple devices. But there is an entire home brewing subculture that has risen up based entirely on being able to make beer yourself at relatively low costs. Its legal, its fun and brewing beer can become a major hobby as well.

All that said, it’s true that the initial costs can be pretty intimidating. The cost of the pots, fermenters and other specialized equipment can run into several hundred dollars. It’s risky to sink that kind of money into a new hobby before you even know if you will enjoy making beer, whether the beer you make will be drinkable or if you will stick with it. And during a time when we need most of what we earn just to get by, that is a risk that may be holding you back from getting into the hobby of home brewing.

]]>

Of course one natural solution is to get your first exposure and training in making beer with someone else’s equipment. Once you start poking around home brewing web sites and places where the equipment and supplies to make beer are sold in town, you can find out about clubs and societies that are full of people who have taken the plunge and are making beer all the time right at home like you want to do.

These people not only love home brewing, they can become real evangelists for their hobby and with very little encouragement, you can enjoy some Saturdays in their shop or kitchen learning how to brew beer with someone that already knows how. This kind of experience is priceless because you learn what to look for in equipment and what is essential and what is optional. You can go through the brewing process and learn a lot about how to make actual beer that is drinkable and what pitfalls to avoid. Meanwhile, you may not have spent any more money than to buy your new friend lunch or to bring the pretzels for the tasting party when the beer is done.

But then when you are ready to get started, your knowledge of what you really need will pay off big time. You still don’t have to pay top dollar for the equipment to get up and running. Lots of people get started with making beer and for many reasons, their hobby stops suddenly. The outcome is that there is a pretty brisk used home brewing equipment market out there. You can find discounted equipment in new or like new condition out on eBay or Craigslist all the time. But don’t overlook the local sources as those home brewer clubs and associations may have bulletin boards with listings of people who want to sell their equipment. Pawn shops in the area are another great resource.

Another great way to save money is to go together with a friend and buy the equipment together and split the costs all the way down the line. This makes brewing beer more fun and social and each of you can have the equipment and supplies home at different times to get to know it and learn to make good beer separately so you can make great beer together. And who knows, you may get so good at it that you start selling your beer to local pubs. And when the big bucks come rolling in from that, your investment in learning to brew beer will really look good to you.

The Heart of a True Brewer

September 4, 2011

The Heart of a True Brewer

In any big area of focus and specialization, there are those who go on to greatness in that passion and those who only go so far, lose interest or get discouraged and quit. We see that in sports, business and art to name just a few areas. So it makes sense that the hobby of making beer at home will be subject to the same laws. Many people get interested in how to make beer at home, buy the equipment and may go as far as to make a batch or two of beer. But then after a while they lose the persistence to getting really good at making beer and they give up.

But in this very popular and growing field of home brewing, there are a few who go on to greatness as makers of fine beers at home. It’s from this group that you commonly see the finest of home brewing being produced and the beers that consistently win prizes at home brewing contests that are held each year. And it is from this group that you most often see amateur beer makers make the leap over to begin selling their beer commercially and maybe go on to owning their own beer pub in town and realizing an entirely new career doing what they love to do, making beer all the time.

Those that reach that level of success have the heart of a true Brewmeister and they exhibit all the traits of someone who is destined to create some wonderful and delicious beers. So what characteristics are in the personality of someone who can push on to that level of success brewing beer? It’s helpful to think this through to see if perhaps you have the heart of a true Brewmeister as well.

]]>

Someone who will succeed at brewing beer has a high attention to detail. At first, you have to learn the ropes of making beer by following the instructions that come with your beer kit or equipment and learn all you can about the step by step process of making a very basic batch of good tasting beer. The future Brewmeister wants to learn the basics and get them down very well so his foundation is strong once the time comes to innovate and use some brewing creativity to make some truly new and interesting blends.

The Brewmeister also is a virtual fanatic about cleanliness and sanitation. Most often when you taste home made beer that is flawed, it comes from lack of attention to sanitizing the preparation equipment and maintaining an almost operating room level quality of sanitation throughout the brewing process. To the one who is a Brewmeister through and through, there is not such thing as “good enough” when it comes to how clean his beer brewing facilities are. Only perfectly sanitary is good enough.

Another basic personality trait in a person who is devoted to making only the finest of quality beer is patience. This patience shows itself in a number of ways. It shows itself in the willingness to shop without tiring to get the finest ingredients for the next batch of beer he makes. It shows itself in the willingness to only buy enough materials for one batch and then go out and buy a completely new set of materials each time just to make sure his ingredients are perfectly fresh.

Above all the true Brewmeister will wait as long as it takes for that beer to go through the weeks of fermentation and aging. And if he takes that beer out after a cycle is done and tastes it and it isn’t up to his high standards, he can wait another month or two or more until it reaches a level of high quality that will be acceptable to anyone who drinks the beer he makes.

Finally that one Brewmeister in a hundred who goes on to greatness in making the best beer imaginable from a home brewing setting is impossible to discourage. The idea of giving up because one batch of beer didn’t come out right or something else introduced a set back to the effort is out of the question. It is that kind of persistence combined with patience, attention to detail and creativity that is the perfect personality blend that makes a great Brewmeister who will go on to greatness in this wonderful passion of home brewing.

Beer Brewing Instructions – Ways For Making Great Beers

Creating a well-crafted beer involves not only the selection of the finest ingredients, but additionally, it requires you to adhere to the proper beer brewing instructions. Yes, it  is truly not difficult to start making good home brews. Thanks to the easily available beer kits that contain easy to prepare beer recipes with their corresponding beer ingredients.

Beer making at home isn’t just an excellent hobby, but it is also another stylish way to develop your self-confidence while enjoying fun with your very own brew. To have a good grasp of making beers, you just need to know very well what the beer ingredients do and what they really want you to complete the job right and produce the important taste of quality beer.

Just like learning a whole new skill, it’s far better to do it right initially to prevent missing on little yet important details of the entire process. Making good beers isn’t an exception. While you learn how to make beer the proper way, you’ll get familiar with the process and soon after, you’ll figure out how to go above the fundamentals. Before you know it, the brew master has already been born within you. To get things simpler, it is just a brilliant idea to put in my mind that you’ll just be coping with only four things:

]]>

Malt -This refers  to the brewer’s malt that comes from malted barley where fermentable maltose sugars have been completely processed and turned into liquid malt extract or powder. Using malt extract is in fact, the most effective way to start making homemade beers.

Hops -These flowers are responsible for the bitter taste, aroma and flavor of beers. The pleasant bitterness of hops provides balance to the sugar and  the malt. Hops also work as preservative for your brew. There’s  actually a great deal of hop varieties utilized in various beer recipes.

Yeast – The ingredient that triggers fermentation. Both different types of beer yeast are Ale and Lager and are available liquid and dried. As lagering needs time to work, it’s much quicker to brew beers using ale yeast.

Water – The main ingredient for  beer brewing. As water largely change the taste of your own brew, it is crucial to apply the ideal water for beers and that is certainly – charcoal filtered water.

And now, for the even simpler beer brewing instructions:

Step1. Sanitizing. Just before getting started, it is absolutely necessary to sanitize everything that  exactly touches your brew to avoid contamination. There is no shortcut to sanitizing everything than soaking them with a very good sanitizing solution, rinsing them and allowing them to be air dried.

Step2. Mix most beer ingredients that happen to be supplied in beer kits. The malt extract is typically available by the can which happen to be processed with hops according to the beer recipe. All you have to do is to dissolve the contents of the can along with the brewing sugar into two litres of hot water. Add 17 litres of cold water and mix well.

Step3. Cool the wort and add the yeast. The wort needs to be cooled as quickly as possible. Add the yeast that came with the kit and ferment with the airlock in place. Store your brew between 18-28C for  approximately 4-7 days.

Step4. Fermentation (the beer intended for) process takes place at this stage since the sugars are turned into alcohol and co2.

Step5. Carbonation. Once the hydrometer’s reading remains steady all day and night, the fermentation is complete and you’re now ready to bottle your beer after carbonation.

Beer nerds tend to save the caps from their favorite beers (or almost everything you drink if you’re like me). But if they’re just going to sit in a bag in the cupboard – what’s the point? Why not make magnets out of them that you can proudly display on your fridge? In this video I show you how I do it. Bear in mind there are several ways to make beer bottle cap magnets, and I think the method I’m using is actually one of the more expensive routes. It probably is cheaper to use similar sized magnets and simply glue them, but this method is cleaner, easier, and faster since you don’t have to wait for the glue to dry. If you know of any other techniques please let me know in the comments box. Also, I should you a few tricks on how to get bottle caps off without bending and creasing them (that much).
